Game3.js Newsletter #1
A Vision for Decentralized Games, KERNEL, and an Open-source Game of the Week!
Welcome to the Game3.js
Newsletter!
We started Game3.js with a vision:
5 to 10 years from now, what will fully realized Web 3.0 games look like?
Today’s blockchain games are just the early iterations of Web 3.0 games. A fully realized Web 3.0 game will need to be more compelling than web, mobile, console, and VR games. Their virtual economies will need to have the same utility as those of sovereign fiat currencies. They will need to provide more meaning in people’s lives than just being a vehicle for intrusive ads and forced in-app purchases.
To achieve this vision, we need to bring in more builders, and make it as easy as possible for them to start building games in this new Web 3.0 world.
Game3.js aspires to be the game framework that will lead the way 🔥
Thank you for joining us in this quest!
Gitcoin Unitize Hackathon
Game3.js was started around the same time as the Gitcoin Unitize Hackathon, and we’ve put up some bounties there for Gitcoiners to help us build out an example Battle Royale .io style game and to add support for Nakama, an open-source multiplayer backend.
KERNEL
Game3.js is also one of the projects in the KERNEL Genesis Block, where we’ve joined with the best Web 3.0 builders to collaborate and build on each other’s work.
There are some other Web 3.0 gaming projects in KERNEL that we’re looking forward to integrating into the framework.
We’ve already received useful feedback on the readability of the game3js.com site, which we will apply over the coming weeks.
Next Steps
For the next version of Game3.js, we’re looking at adding some example solidity smart contracts that developers can use to build incentive systems for their games. Initially these will be in the form of leaderboards and tournaments. We will also be adding better Web 3.0 transaction feedback by using Rimble or Drizzle components.
Today’s Open Source Game
Every week we’ll highlight an open-source game and imagine how they can be improved by decentralization and Web 3.0.
Ancient Beast by Freezing Moon
A turn-based strategy game, players take control of a Dark Priest that can summon a wide range of mysterious Ancient Beasts, each with their own unique abilities.
By simply using the same playbook as other blockchain games, we can add decentralization to the game by making each creature an NFT. As a player plays the game, his Ancient Beasts become more and more valuable, allowing them to trade and sell them.
With the game being open-source, what if we go a step further— what if we create a token incentive system for creators to make their own Ancient Beasts, contributing to the source code directly? What if we create a DAO that governs which Ancient Beasts get into the next version, or institutes balance changes for Ancient Beasts that seem too powerful? The DAO can even evolve to become a governing body for the whole game itself.
Ancient Beast also has a grant up on Gitcoin, please check it out!
